KWELA FILM ACADEMY supports the development of the South African film industry by offering practical training that informs, instructs and enables candidates to become proficient & respected in well-paid technical areas of filmmaking, while building an experienced workforce that will ensure visiting producers have a roster of qualified crew available for their productions.

Impi Films is developing feature films & television series’ of compelling projects with indigenous storylines. Produced with extremely high production values, the projects feature South African and international leading actors, writers & directors to attract treaty co-productions and to assist in securing international distribution and foreign pre-sales, as well as local theatrical and television sales.

FILM FINANCING

Impi Films finances its productions’ budgets by using pre sales as the foundation funding augmented by soft loans and non recoupable grants from the KZN & NFVF film funds, plus investments from the ECDC & IDC, plus the Department of Trade & Industry’s production incentive rebate - as well as venture capital that uses section 12(O) & 12(J) tax incentives to off set tax deferrable investments.

PRODUCTION SERVICE

The production team at Impi Films has vast experience in servicing productions with producer / director teams from India, Europe, United Kingdom & the USA.

We also have experience of the various requirements for production incentives and soft loan funding available in South Africa, as well as a thorough knowledge of the creative and technical teams, plus long established relationships with equipment and transport rental houses, accommodation, catering & casting directors, as well as reputable accounting services to ensure all production elements are carefully considered, monitored and guaranteed by completion bond companies, if required.

EMERGING FILMMAKERS

In accordance with the transformation of the South Africa and in alliance with the country’s mandate to stimulate production of South African films and television series by South African storytellers - the team at Impi Films is primed to support aspiring, young Black producers, directors and writers to help foster compelling South African content and to ensure these filmmakers receive a solid production and financing support on their films.

Masinga

“Awakened” by an ancestral calling, Detective MASINGA recognizes the survivor of a sex trafficking investigation from a shamanic vision he experienced as a teenager. As Masinga confronts a life-and-death struggle to save XIA from the clutches of hardened criminals and corrupt police officials, he is forced to confront the shamanic practices that define his culture.

Alienated and obsessed, Masinga is determined to follow his calling, which challenges the feisty prosecutor VIVETTE and her director, SELEBI. He also encounters the psychopathic SERGEI and his accomplice, WASHESHA, as well as his old nemesis, defense attorney, JEREMIAH MILLS.

Set in the docklands and strip clubs of South Africa, MASINGA - THE CALLING exposes high-level corruption within the prosecuting authority, as well as delves into the dark recesses of the Shamanic traditions of African culture

Time After Time

The bitter-sweet romance of an independent young Indian, ANJALI - destined to marry RAJ - until encounters with her past life as a slave (circa1900) force her to re-evaluate her present life’s destiny.

Anjali’s life turns upside down when her past life influences her realisations that she is not in love with RAJ. She then meets MANU whom she recognises as the reincarnated spirit of MONAJ – her lover from her past life, who was killed in the British Empire’s Anglo Boer War.

Xiangya

A Chinese conservationist MEILI LING struggles to save her father from a life in prison when he is coerced by a Chinese Warlord, SHUN XI into the illegal carving of ivory to pay off his son’s gambling debt.

In a bold plan Meili negotiates with Shun Xi to heist the stockpile of confiscated ivory kept by the CITES conservationist group in South Africa, in exchange for her father’s freedom. However Meili plan is to to double cross Shun Xi with the Chinese authorities, and identify his syndicate poaching ivory from Africa to China, in a bid to save the slaughter of African elephant.

Aided by an ex mercenary, wildlife photographer, HANS SCHOEMAN and his African tracker ELVIS - they must overcome a dangerous Islamic middleman HASSAN and the Somalian terrorist CABAAS who trade elephant tusks for weaponry to fight their religious war. Together, the trio must ensure Shun and his poaching syndicate are arrested, so the elephanst of Africa freed from the masace of poaching.

Kingdom of Heaven

Kingdom of Heaven: Is a 8 x 24 minute, scripted television series for children, set in Umzimvelo Wildlife Nature Reserves of Hluhluwe and Imfolozi of Kwa Zulu-Natal, South Africa. Our premise is to feature a Zulu game ranger and a group of five pre-teen children from South Africa. These young actors will be selected through social media campaigns and competitions, and will be rewarded with a three week safari into the savannah grasslands of KwaZulu- Natal’s amazing Ezemvelo Nature Reserves.

Here they will encounter Kwa Zulu-Natal’s flora and fauna on a series of game walks and game drives, learn about the wonderful animal species found in South Africa, and also various survival skills, as they get to know one other and each other’s cultures.

Mark Engels

Born in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: Marks’ career rose to prominence when he was awarded the SAMA (South African Music Award) for his film clip of Vicki Sampson’s “My Afrikan Dream”.

Subsequently thrice awarded South African Society of Cinematography’s (SASC) “Visible Spectrum Award” for Jonathon Butler's "Exodus", followed by multi-camera concert films of Burning Spear's "Home to my Roots," and Joseph Hill's "Live in Africa." Mark’s love for African culture and heritage has seen him collaborate with African legends: Philip Thabane, Caiphus Semenya, Vusi Mahlasela, Judith Sephuma and Yvonne Chaka Chaka - as well as directing multi-camera television broadcasts of Cape Town’s legendary Jazz Festival for a number of years. He has also produced scores of international advertising commercials and shortform films for international production teams.

VERONICA VAN DER RIET

I am a South African citizen, biological mother of three and foster mother of four. I entered adult life as a qualified teacher of remedial education. Subsequently as an HR Practitioner with 33 years of experience in Training and Human Resources with a qualification “TRAIN THE TRAINER” from the EDUSETA. With a deep commitment to Film and Photography, I have also engaged in location scouting, casting and production for many years. As such my passion to assist others to optimise their skills and encourage them to be best they can be has found me at the KWELA FILM ACADEMY as a valued Independent Trustee.

Philane Ndaba

Philane Ndaba has both a Bachelors Degree and a Post Graduate degree in Film Production, both from the University of Cape Town. Some of Philane’s films, screen and stage plays have included student and independently produced works such as Jaco and Jill (2006;) Should It Hurt So Much (2007;) Escape (2008;) Tragedies (2009;) and Locked In (2009.)

Philane also served as an Assistant Director (AD) on films such as Summer In New England (2008); Free Willy 4 (2009); Themba – A Boy Called Hope (2009) and The Abyss Boys (2009.) He has also production managed When We Were Black 2 (2014), directed by Khalo Matabane.

Philane was the head writer of the hit TV drama , Ring of Lies (2016), a Mzansi Magic original show, and was nominated for best writer of a telenovela by the SA Writer’s Guild in 2016.

Philane has also completed the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Sediba Spark Scriptwriter’s programme.

Recently, Philane directed the short film Human Greed (2019), a dark drama about Human trafficking in South Africa, starring veteran South African actors Deon Lotz, Hlubi Mboya and Tema Sepobedi.

Philane was also the production manager on Warner Brother’s franchise films Deep Blue Sea 3 (2019) starring Tania Raymond and Eraser Reborn (2022), starring Dominic Sherwood and Jacky Lai, as well as Netflix’s Afterlife of the Party (2020) starring Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice. Other Studio Films Philane has production managed include the South African Spaghetti Western Five Fingers for Marseilles (2017); Sony Productions’ Bloodshot (2020) [starring Vin Diesel]; Pureflix’s TV Drama Revelation Road (2023); as well as Netflix’s Bollywood hit Drama Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (2023) starring Bollywood Stars: Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor
